Promptly Admit It

Our experience shows that apologizing can provide the serenity we need to cope with guilt.  In the past we either didn’t care or were unaware of the harm we caused others. Now that our eyes are open a little wider we can see the consequences of our missteps. Now we feel guilt and it hurts!
Fortunately, we have options. We can use our guilt to motivate us to apologize. It is not fun, but the sooner we do it, the sooner we will feel better.
Afterwards, we are serene and proud of ourselves. We may feel better about ourselves than before we made the mistake!

Go to Meetings

Our experience shows that attending a support group meeting can provide the serenity to cope with anger. Whether we are dealing with an addiction, depression, or divorce, the support of friends in the program can help us cope and grow.

Great Outdoors

Our experience shows that quality time in nature can provide the serenity to cope with stress. A brief walk threw a city park can help us cope with the stress of the day. A weekend camping at a state park can help us reflect on life and put things in their proper perspective.

Thanks to Mark Dempster (@mdcounseling) for tweeting a link to an article about the benefits of enjoying the great outdoors. Research by Valerie Gladwell of the University of Essex shows that “'green' environments can be an effective stress buster.”

A Fear Faced

Experience shows that exercise can provide the courage to overcome fear. When we exercise, we push ourselves physically and emotionally. A voice inside us may say, "Give up, I'm tired", but we choose to listen to the voice that says "Keep going, you can do it". We achieve much more than better physical health when we participate in yoga, jogging, biking, swimming, group exercise, or jumping rope. We achieve the courage because a fear faced is a fear erased.

Now on Facebook & Twitter

Today’s tweet: Craving + Reading = Courage.

Experience shows that reading can provide the courage to overcome cravings.  Reading Daily Meditations, Chicken Soup for Soul, or recovery literature is a great coping skill for when we are overwhelmed by a desire to act out, cut, binge, obsess, etc….

Baffling

Our experience shows that journaling when confused can provide the wisdom we need. Briefly writing about our thoughts and feelings at the end of the day can add clarity to issues we are dealing with. Writing about one topic can trigger thoughts about another topic. Before we know it, we have gained a lot of insight in a short period of time.

With a Little Help From My Friends

Our experience shows that talking to a friend can provide the courage to cope with fear. A friend who understands our fear can provide a supportive, non-judgmental ear. If they have faith in us, perhaps we can develop faith in ourselves.
